Workington Zebra Rugby Union Finches Seal Cup Run With Twickenham Win

It is a moment all players dream of going to the home of your sport and winning, Workington Zebra Rugby Union Finches have gone and done that.

Monday May 1 is a date that will live on for Women’s Rugby Union in Cumbria as Workington Finches claimed a 27-22 win against Avonmouth at Twickenham Stadium, London.

Two tries from Megan Donald, Charlotte Cammack and Hannah Thornberry along with a penalty and two conversions from Nicole Stewart made the long trip to the capital and home of English Rugby Union a happy one.

The Finches journey started back on September 18 with a trip to Skipton Ladies and a 57-10 defeat in the Women’s Cup moved the West Cumbrian side into the Plate competition.

They then beat Old Brodleians Ladies 21-5 were awarded the win against Scarborough Valkyries and then met Penrith Ladies on February 5.

Tries from Thornbery, Donald and Whelan took Workington through to the semifinal with 17-5 win over their East Cumbrian rivals.

A 15-10 victory over Lichfield in the semifinal put the Finches into the final and their journey has now finished with a 27-22 win over Avonmouth.

With the teams league fixtures completed and the trip to London a successful one the side will enjoy the summer before starting again in the autumn.
