By Robert Haile

Cumbria have taken the Men’s National Triples Bowls Championship title at Leamington Spa.

In the Final played today, Sunday August 28, the Cumbria triple beat their Derbyshire counter parts 10-14.

Representing Cumbria at the finals were Aspatria Bowling Club members Kevin Harrison, Mark Irwin and Stuart Irwin who have played six games in four days.

A spokesperson for Aspatria Bowling Club said: “Aspatria Bowling Club would like to congratulate our very own National triples winners 2022.

“Mark Irwin, Stuart Irwin and Kevin Harrison after narrowly missing out in the 2019 final this title is just reward for there dedication and hard work.

“The club is seeing unprecedented success
this year with Mark Irwin also winning the County singles and the trio also winning the Northern Counties title.

“Cumbria is currently thriving as a Bowling county and long may it continue.”

Member of the winning triple Stuart Irwin said: “We are obviously delighted to win the title and go one better than in 2010.

“Its been a long hard 4 days and I feel I have aged about 20 years.

“It was 6 hard tough matches but we are really happy and pleased to have won and bringing the trophy back to Cumbria and Aspatria bowling Club.”

Starting on Thursday 25 against Oxfordshire winning 20-19, on Friday they beat Northumberland 15-12 before beating Warwickshire B 15-20.

Another two games on Saturday had the Cumbrian side beat Norfolk 15-18 and then a 11-27 win against Lancashire put them into the final.

They are not the only bowlers from Aspatria in action as Stuart Bowman and Richard Gibson are representing Cumbria in the Men’s Pairs where they won their first match 12-21 against Kent and now face Bedfordshire.

Sadly for the Women’s Triples Cumbria went out in the preliminary round with Dorothy Westwood, Karen Westwood, Pauline Hodgson of Wigton Bowling Club losing to Essex A 9-25.

On Monday August 29 Women’s Pairs get under way with Wigton’s Chelsie Browbank and Molly Haney and the Men’s Junior Pairs with Cumbria’s representatives, Ryan Brannan and Callum Hodgson, take on Bedfordshire on Tuesday.

This is not the end of the competition for Aspatria and Mark Irwin as he will be back in action in the Singles competition on September 8 and Aspatria will be competing in the Mens’s Top Club.
