A Cumbria Police investigation is underway following a rape allegation in Whitehaven.

The report was made to police shortly before 3:30am on Saturday, July 25.

A 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape shortly after the report and has been released on bail, with conditions, while enquiries continue.

A spokesperson for Cumbria Police said: “Police are aware of social media posts circulating containing inaccurate information relating to this report.

“We would encourage the public to seek information from official and trusted sources and to refrain from sharing unverified information, which can contribute to misinformation and unnecessary concern.”

The victim, an adult female, is being supported by specialist officers.

Investigative enquires are ongoing to establish the full circumstance of the incident.
