Candy Cabs Cumbria: Parking problems and ‘excessive’ utility rise causes shop to move towns

Candy Cabs Cumbria will be closing and relocating as parking problems and ‘excessive’ utility rises leads to harbour side move.

The popular sweet shop made the ‘difficult decision’ to close their Cleator Moor shop from Saturday, May 30, as they move to Whitehaven.

They will be opening the new store before the permanent closure of the Cleator Moor shop.

Taking to social media they explained that the closure had come ‘due to the ongoing parking issues’ at the shop and ‘excessive rises in Electric and Water charges’.

The parking has become such a problem they have had issues with deliveries being cancelled or returned as they can’t get near the shop.

When they have events to attend, such as Eat Street Cumbria Maryport on May 23 and 24, they can’t get near the shop to load the van or trailer.

The post added: “I have to block one side of the road causing traffic to back up and cause people delays.”

They also said it has effected footfall to the shop.

They continued: “Customers have gone to ordering online constantly due to turning up and not getting near the shop, when you’re elderly, a mam with kids, prams etc and the weather we have here we don’t expect you to park on the square and walk down to the shop.”

As with all businesses their utility bills have risen and ‘from paying a managable figure to in recent times, now over £250+ for the same amount of appliances’.

Though it is not all sour as the new shop in Whitehaven was described as modern, with designated parking for the Candy Cabs team with bollards at the front and back entrance for loading.

The quirky sweet shop will serve handmade ice cream, and a 5 minute walk from the Harbour it ‘will be all round better for customers and ourselves’.

Opening times for the Cleator Moor shop until Saturday, May 30 are:

Thursday – 10am to 6pm (10:00 – 18:00)

Friday – 10am to 6pm (10:00 – 18:00)

Saturday – 11am to 5pm (11:00 – 17:00)
