Review: Man Called Otto Is A Heartbreaking Tom Hanks Classic

By Gary

A Man Called Otto is a heartbreaking look at society and another fantastic film by Tom Hanks.

Otto (Tom Hanks) is a grump who’s given up on life following the loss of his wife and wants to end it all.

When a young family moves in nearby, he meets his match in quick-witted Marisol (Mariana Treviño), leading to a friendship that will turn his world around.

A remake of the fantastic the 2015 Swedish film A Man Called Ove directed by Hannes Holm which was an adaptation of the novel A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman.

The Swedish film adaptation was nominated for two Academy Awards and was the highest grossing foreign film of 2016 in the United States so this remake had something to live up to.

Tom Hanks is amazing as Otto, this film is so emotional and heart wrenching. It has heart and laughter. The film is also uplifting in parts and a feel good movie.

Some of the scenes are really sad as Otto deals with the lose of his wife. There are scenes in this about suicide and not wanting to go on which I believe most people can relate to at some point in their lives.

This film has a neighbourhood watch element and tells you to look after the elderly and less fortunate people who live on your street.

There is also a social media element to this movie which Otto is totally clueless about.

There is also a sub plot in the movie about a transgender person who is not accepted by his parents.

I highly recommend this movie but you need to make sure you have a box of tissues at the ready.

My Rating: 8/10
