Cumbria Police were called just after 12am in the early hours to reports of a two-vehicle collision on the A65 at Stainton.
The road was closed for a number of hours while a forensic collision investigation iu was carried out.
The collision on September 8, involved a black Citroën Saxo and a white Vauxhall Antara.
There were two occupants in the Saxo, a 20-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman, from Kendal, who were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Antara, a 36-year-old woman, was taken to hospital with significant injuries.
Specially trained officers have been appointed to the families of the deceased.
