Barrow Council Thank Residents For Supporting Local Businesses And Staying Safe On The High Street

Barrow council leaders have issued their thanks to residents who helped support local businesses with a safe return to the high street last week.

Non-essential shops were able to open from Monday, June 15, as part of an easing of coronavirus lockdown measures nationwide.

The move saw Barrow Borough Council launch its Town Centre Recovery Plan – to make sure preparations were in place to welcome people back and improve their experience of the high street.

It included new signage and stickers placed throughout the centres of Barrow, Dalton and Askam urging people to maintain social distancing measures as they visited shops and businesses.

Now the efforts of residents and visitors who helped maintain a safe shopping environment for everyone have been praised by Councillor Ann Thomson, the leader of Barrow Borough Council.

Cllr Thomson said: “We were glad to welcome people back to the town centres after lockdown last week.

“We know businesses have had an incredibly difficult and challenging time since March and that it’s more important than ever for people to support them now.

“During lockdown shopping habits have changed but if possible please choose to shop local. Our independent businesses need your custom to be sustainable.

“I would like to thank all those who have returned to the high street and observed social distancing and the recommended hygiene measures to stay safe.

“No efforts are wasted in this regard. Please continue to wash hands regularly and keep a safe distance from other people when you’re out and about.”

As well as new signage and stickers, Barrow Borough Council’s recovery plan included a deep cleanse of the town centre and refurbishment of public benches, with more cleaning in the works in other locations for the coming weeks.

Parking in car parks operated by Barrow Borough Council remains free of charge until July 6.

Public toilets in Fell Street and The Pavillion have also now reopened.
