Carlisle MP backs new legislation for fairer, faster and more effective asylum system

Carlisle MP Julie Minns has backed new Government legislation designed to create a fairer, faster and more effective asylum system while strengthening border security and tackling abuse of the rules.

The Immigration and Asylum Bill proposes the biggest overhaul of the asylum system in a generation, introducing a new independent appeals body to reduce delays, reforms to modern slavery and Article 8 processes where they are being misused, and new safe and legal routes for people fleeing conflict and persecution.

Julie Minns, Carlisle MP

Julie Minns MP said: ā€œPeople rightly expect an immigration and asylum system that is fair, properly managed and commands public confidence.

ā€œBritain has a proud tradition of offering sanctuary to those fleeing war and persecution, but that must go hand in hand with strong borders and a system that cannot be exploited.

ā€œFor too long, lengthy delays, growing backlogs and criminal gangs profiting from dangerous Channel crossings have undermined confidence in the system.

ā€œThat isn’t fair on taxpayers, local communities or those with genuine claims for protection.

ā€œThese reforms are about restoring order by speeding up decisions, creating new safe and legal routes for refugees, tackling abuse and ensuring that those with no right to remain in the UK can be removed more quickly.ā€

The Bill would establish a new Independent Immigration Appeals Authority to replace the current appeals process, with the aim of reducing lengthy waits and speeding up decisions.

It also proposes carefully managed work and study routes for recognised refugees, working alongside the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, while strengthening action against people smugglers and those seeking to abuse the system.

Julie added: ā€œThe vast majority of people want to see an asylum system that is both compassionate and credible.

ā€œThat means protecting those who genuinely need our help, while making sure the rules are respected and enforced.

ā€œI believe these proposals are an important step towards achieving that balance.ā€
