Attacker who asked ‘do you want knifed?’ before stabbing, jailed

A man who asked “do you want knifed?” before stabbing a victim in Carlisle has been jailed.

At 10:05pm, on January 4, 2025, police were called to Botchergate, Carlisle with a report that a man had been stabbed.

When officers arrived at the scene a victim was found with a stab wound and was significantly bleeding.

A caller told police they heard a man ask “do you want to be knifed” before attacking the police, the court heard.

Police inquiries revealed Marc Proudfoot, 33 of no fixed abode, and the victim had been involved in a verbal dispute shortly before the attack.

CCTV footage showed Proudfoot lunge toward the victim and stabbing him in the abdomen, the court was told.

Proudfoot was arrested shortly after the incident and officers located a knife in his jacket pocket, as well as another knife in his sock.

The 33-year-old had stolen both knives earlier that day from a supermarket on London Road, in Carlisle.

On Friday, June 19, Proudfoot was sentenced, at Carlisle Crown Court, to six years and eight months in prison for wounding with intent, possession of a bladed article and shoplifting.

Detective Constable Kirean Salkeld, Carlisle CID, said: “When Proudfoot went out that night, he was in possession of two stolen kitchen knives – there is absolutely no excuse for this.

“To then go on and use a knife as part of an assault is unjustifiable.

“Any assault with a knife has the potential to end in tragedy and we take offences such as these extremely seriously and will prosecute those who carry knives on our streets.”
