Rugby Union: Cumbria’s Sides Return To League Action

Cumbria’s rugby union sides returned to Regional and County league action with mixed results.

In Regional 1 North West Anselmians went top with a 56-0 win over Blackburn in the opening game of the season on Saturday, September 7.

Manchester sit second after a 30-17 victory over Leek with Newport (Salop) third with a 18-60 win over promoted Birkenhead Park and Penrith occupy fourth having beat Stockport 38-45.

Also beating promoted opponents Rossendale are fifth after a high scoring 31-62 victory over Stoke on Trent as Wirral just won 31-33 at Kendal.

On Saturday, September 14, Anselmians host Manchester as Newport (Salop) welcome Stockport while Penrith face Leek.

Rossendale take on Kendal while Wirral play Birkenhead Park and Blackburn look for their first points against Stoke on Trent.

In the Regional 2 North Morpeth sit top after a 21-42 win over Guisborough with Northern in second having beaten Consett 36-17 and Upper Eden hold third with a 24-22 win against Keswick.

Aspatria are in fourth after a 5-23 win over Kirkby Lonsdale as West Hartlepool won a close game 10-12 at Middlesbrough and Carlisle returned to Regional 2 with a 32-32 draw with Durham City.

On September 14, Morpeth take on Upper Eden while Northern head to West Hartlepool and Aspatria travel to Keswick.

Carlisle welcome Kirkby Lonsdale as Durham City face Middlesbrough while Consett play Guisborough.

In the opening round of Regional 2 North West Altrincham Kersal went top with a 28-32 win at Winnington Park as Bowden beat Eccles 12-55 while Burnage were 19-41 victors at Sandbach.

Crewe & Nantwich got off to a winning start with a 12-27 win at Widnes as Firwood Waterloo ran out 33-0 winners over Douglas (I.O.M) while Vale of Lune were 30-20 victors over Northwich.

Early table toppers Altrincham Kersal head to Burnage on September 14, as Bowden host Vale of Lune while Crewe & Nantwich welcome Eccles.

New side Widnes travel to Douglas (I.O.M) with Sandbach heading to Northwich and Firwood Waterloo play Winnington Park.

The Cumbria league returned on Saturday with a new addition.

Ambleside welcomed Creighton in their first fixture but the game ended in a 22-28 defeat as Wigton got off to a winning start with a 64-10 victory over Hawcoat Park while Penrith 2nd came away from St Benedicts with a 14-38 win.

Workington started their campaign with a 14-33 win at Aspatria 2nd while Keswick 2nd were 29-25 winners against Millom and Egremont beat Whitehaven 17-8 in a close game.

The rugby starts early as Keswick 2nd face Wigton on Friday, September 13.

Cockermouth play their first game back in the Cumbria league at Aspatria 2nd on Saturday, September 14, as do Windermere as they welcome Egremont.

Creighton host Penrith 2nd as Workington play Whitehaven while Ambleside played St Benedicts and Hawcoat Park head to Millom.
