The University of Cumbria has throwing open its doors this week and inviting visitors to enjoy the work of its final year creative and media arts students.

The university’s Institute of Education, Arts & Society is welcoming visitors to its undergraduate degree show 2024, Made in Carlisle.

It is a showcase exhibiting the work of this year’s 79 final year students from across a range of areas including Film & Television, Fine Art, Games Design, Graphic Design, Illustration, Photography, and Wildlife Media.

The students are responsible for putting on the exhibition with the design, production and fundraising all part of their final project.

Dr Ruth Harrison-Palmer, Director of the University of Cumbria’s Institute of Education, Arts & Society, said: “We’re so pleased to share our students’ work publicly and celebrate their success as they progress.

“The annual degree show is both a celebration of students and their work, and a critical point in their professional careers.

“The exhibitors will be moving into new communities where they will be fully equipped to practice their specialism and have a real-world impact on those they work with and on those that experience their work.”

Across the University of Cumbria’s Brampton Road campus in Carlisle, studio spaces have been transformed into exhibition galleries that are free and open for visitors to tour.

The annual event is an excellent opportunity for students to showcase their talent, celebrate the culmination of their studies and connect with their audience.

Third year BA (Hons) Graphic Design student, Tyler Lambert created the concept and design of the 2024 Degree Show and was responsible for overseeing the brand campaign from design to production. 

Tyler, from Stowmarket in Suffolk said: “I developed the concept for the degree show around students having a sense of pride in being able to have a university education in Carlisle.

“To be responsible for the campaign has been a great opportunity and I’ve developed my communication skills and confidence as a result.  It has been a rewarding experience to see my designs in production.”

Holly Nicol from Darlington has been studying Fine Art and said: “I chose the University of Cumbria as I wanted to study on a small campus and feel part of a community.

“I have enjoyed being able to explore some powerful messages and have the freedom to develop my art in a supportive and challenging studio environment.”

Made in Carlisle is free to attend and open to visitors. The show runs until Friday, June 7, open 10am-4pm daily.

The exhibition closes with an open day and family viewing on the campus on Saturday, June 8, 10am-3pm.
