Tough Start For Cumbria’s Rugby Union Sides As County And National Leagues Get Underway

It was a tough start for Cumbria’s rugby union sides as the national and county leagues started.

In Regional 1 North West promoted Penrith suffered a 24-33 defeat to Macclesfield while Kendal opened their account with a 33-24 win against Stockport.

Leek won a close 18-13 game at home to Sandbach as Anselmians drew 22-22 with Manchester.

Last years second placed side Blackburn started off with a 62-15 win against Northwich and Rossendale went second with a 61-33 win at home to Wirral.

Kendal make the trip to Manchester on Saturday, September 9, as Penrith are also on the road to Stockport.

Leaders Blackburn head to Sandbach while Rossendale host Leek as Northwich look for their first points at home to Anselmians and Wirral take on Macclesfield.

It wasn’t a good weekend for Cumbria’s teams in Regional 2 North on Saturday, September 2.

Upper Eden won 33-42 at Consett while Cockermouth went down 36-5 at Durham City and West Hartlepool beat Keswick 36-3.

Aspatria came back from Middlesbrough with a 51-12 defeat as Morpeth beat Stockton 28-12 and Percy Park won 39-12 against Northern.

Cockermouth host Percy Park on Saturday, September 9, as Keswick face Durham City while Aspatria travel to Stockton and Upper Eden welcome West Hartlepool.

In a later kickoff Morpeth play Consett and Northern take on Middlesbrough.

In Regional 2 North West Kirkby Lonsdale lost 46-12 at Crewe & Nantwich on Saturday, September 2, and Burnage won a close game with Whitchurch 35-33.

Altrincham Kersal and Winnington Park played out a high scoring draw 38-38 as Vale of Lune lost 47-12 at Birkenhead Park as Bowden beat Liverpool St Helens 49-22 and Douglas (I.O.M) lost 6-8 at home to Firwood Waterloo.

Kirkby Lonsdale host Douglas (I.O.M) on Saturday, September 9, as Birkenhead Park head to Whitchurch while Crewe & Nantwich travel to Liverpool St Helens.

Third placed Bowden go to Vale of Lune as Altrincham Kersal face fourth placed Burnage and Winnington Park welcome Firwood Waterloo.

Egremont are the early leaders of the Cumbria League as they started with a 53-11 win at home to Windermere as Carlisle drop into second with a 54-17 win against Penrith 2nd while Creighton take third with a 25-23 win over Wigton.

In the other game played Millom and Hawcoat Park were inseparable as they finished 12-12 on Saturday, September 2.

St Benedicts sit fourth as they were awarded a home win over Keswick 2nd and Workington and Silloth will have to face each other at a later date as the match was postponed.

Five of the six games on Saturday, September 9, are set to go ahead with Silloth and Carlisle postponed.

Aspatria 2nds get underway with a home game to Creighton while Whitehaven head to Windermere for their first game and Workington face Penrith 2nds.

Keswick 2nds host Millom and Hawcoat Park welcome Egremont.
