Cumbria’s Bowlers Hit Busy Patch With County And League Matches

The flat green season is in full swing around the county with County matches and league games.

First up is some National bowls news as Bowls England have announced the squads for the British Isle International and Kevin Harrison and Stuart Irwin have been included.

Eden Valley Mixed Triples

In Division One of the Eden Valley Mixed Triples Fitz Park A continued their unbeaten run with a 2-8 victory at Lazonby on Tuesday, May 30, while Appleby A moved into second with a 6-4 win against Dalston.

In fourth Fitz Park B won 8-2 against Penrith Friars B and bottom club Shap lost 0-10 at home to Linton.

Top of the table Temple Sowerby beat Appleby B 8-2 to stay two points ahead of Penrith Castle Park after their 0-10 win at Caldbeck while Penrith Friars A lost 4-6 to Skelton.

Eden Valley Mixed Rinks

In the Mixed Rinks League Fitz Park A won 2-6 at Appleby having brought their match forward from June 8 to add to the 6-2 win over Penrith Friars on Thursday, June 1.

Fitz Park B made it two wins for the club on June 1 with a 2-6 at Lazonby, Shap won 8-0 at home to Penrith Castle Park, Appleby won 4-5 at Temple Sowerby and Skelton and Caldbeck shared the spoils with a 4-4 draw.

Eden Valley Ladies Triples

Penrith Friars ladies moved into second with a 1-5 win at Fitz Park on Thursday, June 1, after a 2-4 defeat to Temple Sowerby on Thursday, May 25, while leaders Lazonby won 2-4 at Caldbeck.

West Cumbria Mixed Triples League

Whitehaven A remained in top spot after the round of games on Tuesday, May 23, with a 7-2 home win against Cockermouth based Croft.

Their lead at the top was cut to two points as Cleator Moor won 9-0 at home against Frizington.

Wigton’s 2-7 win at Harris Park B keeps them in contact with the top two while at the bottom Vulcan Park lost 2-7 to Maryport and Egremont went down 2-7 to Whitehaven B.

On Tuesday, May 30, Whitehaven A extended their lead with a 4-5 win at Wigton as Cleator Moor lost 8-1 at Maryport.

Workington A climbed into third with a 9-0 win over Vulcan Park as Seaton took a 7-2 win at home to Harris Park A while Harris Park lost out to Seascale 4-5 and Frizington lost 3-6 at home to Egremont.

West Cumbria Fours League

All of the matches ended in 7-0 wins for the victors on Friday, May 26.

Leaders Fitz Park of Keswick defeated Maryport at home, Workington A won at Cleator Moor and Whitehaven A won at Vulcan Park.

The only other game played was between Whitehaven B and Seaton, with the former team winning 7-0.

On 2 June the league leaders Fitz Park picked up a 7-0 at home to Vulcan Park, second placed Workington A took at 7-0 win against Whitehaven B while third placed Whitehaven A won 7-0 at home to Cleator Moor.

While Seaton and Workington B played out a close game with the visitors taking a 3-4 win as Maryport recorded a 7-0 win over Cockermouth.

County Matches

Cumbria’s young bowlers got of to a flying start of the White Rose (under 25 double rink) against Yorkshire on May 28.

The two Cumbria fours consisted of Jack Wilson (Aspatria), Bailey Potts (Wigton Park), David Wilson (Aspatria), Callum Hodgson (Wigton) who won 28-9 and Ryan Corkill (Whitehaven), Taylor Johnston (Silloth), Harry Creighton (Aspatria), Ryan Brannan (Fitz Park) who won 30-18.

This gave Cumbria a 58-27 win over Yorkshire and a spot in the Regional Finals on Sunday July 2 at Dunnington BC, Yorkshire.

Cumbria’s Men got their Middleton Cup season opener against Yorkshire off to a good start at Wigton on June 3.

The six four player teams were

The game ended with Cumbria picking up a 154-89 win and 19 points.

The Cumbria’s Ladies team for the Johns Trophy got underway at Appleby on June 3 against Durham with a 141-20 win and 20 points.

The final for the Junior Singles Championship has been decided with the quarterfinals and semifinals played Sunday, June 4.

The quarterfinals provided plenty of nail biting action as J Williams won 21-20 against H Creighton and D Wilson squeezed past B Potts 21-19.

C Hodgson won 21-14 against R Corkill and R Brannan beat J Wilson 21-14 as well.

In the semifinals J Williams lost 20-21 to D Wilson and C Hodgson won 21-11 against R Brannan.

Wilson will now face Hodgson on later in the season on Finals Days.
