Based on an actual plot in the 1930s, Amsterdam is about three friends who witness a murder and are framed for it.
They end up uncovering one of the most outrageous plots in American history.
An incredible all-star cast, the three friends are played by, Christian Bale (Dark Knight Trilogy), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn) and John David Washington (Tenet).
The supporting cast includes, Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit), Chris Rock, Michael Shannon (Boardwalk Empire), Mike Myers (Austin Powers), Timothy Olyphant (The Book of Boba Fett), Zoe Saldana (Guardians of the Galaxy), Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody), Robert De Niro and even 11-times Grammy Award winner Taylor Swift.
All these actors are Directed by David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook) who also wrote the screenplay for this movie which is based on true events.
This film was inspired by the Business Plot, a 1933 political conspiracy in which wealthy American businessmen and bankers plotted a military coup d’état to overthrow President Franklin D. Roosevelt and replace him with a fascist veterans’ organization headed by U.S. Marine Corps Major General Smedley Butler.
Major General Butler revealed the plot in a testimony under oath to the U.S. House of Representatives’ Special Committee on Un-American Activities in 1934.
The committee concluded that a plot was indeed concocted, but none of the plotters were prosecuted.
The start of this movie reminds me of a Detective story something like Sherlock Holmes.
The camera work in this is amazing we get a lot of close-up shots and some unusual camera angles.
It is very hard to pick out a standout actor in this with such a talented group of actors however Christian Bale is one of the best actors working today and he if anybody leads this film.
Robert De Niro gives an amazing speech towards the end of the film; I think he could get the best supporting actor at this Year’s Oscars for his role as General Dillenbeck who is based on Major General Butler.
There are a lot of bad reviews of this movie which you can find for every movie but for me it is one of my favourite movies of the year.
My Rating: 9/10
