Leader of South Lakeland District Council, Councillor Jonathan Brook, has issued the following statement regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Ukraine as they suffer appallingly in this aggressive, unprovoked act of war by Russia.
“We call on our government to act decisively and compassionately and to extend the hand of support to Ukrainian refugees.
“We pledge to do all that we can to support and stand ready to work with partner organisations to welcome refugees displaced by the conflict.
“South Lakeland has a proud tradition of giving safe refuge to ease the plight of innocent people caught up in terrible world events, from opening our arms to the victims of Nazi aggression during the war 80 years ago to more recent conflicts in Syria.
“We will once again be ready to offer our support and welcome.’’
SLDC is currently finalising arrangements to light up Kendal Castle in the blue and yellow of the Ukrainian flag to show solidarity with the Ukrainian people at this time.
