New York Wedding Among Raffle Prizes At ABF Soldiers Charity August Bank Holiday Funday

Live music, alpacas, carnival games and even a unicorn will be headlining a Bank Holiday family fun day organised to raise ‘vital funds’ for charity, missed out during the pandemic.

When Abigail Bowman set out to raise funds for The Army Benevolent fund; The Soldiers Charity, she simply envisioned a raffle – but after a ‘positive response and support from the local community’ an August Bank Holiday family fun day is now set to go ahead this weekend.

Taking place at St Benedict’s rugby club in Whitehaven, on Monday August 30, Abigail hopes the day will not only raise money for the charity, but raise awareness and showcase what local businesses have to offer.

“Initially, it was envisioned to simply be a prize draw raffle event held at Darling Manor,” she said, “However, after we had such a positive response and support from the local community, we felt we had enough interest and momentum to host a fun day instead, with the opportunity for local small businesses to showcase what they have.

“All whilst vital funds are being raised through the raffle for The Army Benevolent fund; The Soldiers Charity.”

The fun day includes: live entertainment and music, carnival games, a fun fair, alpaca walking, unicorn and princesses, inflatables and a charity raffle with a number of luxurious prizes including the chance to win an all inclusive wedding in New York City.

Abigail explained due to the eventual lifting of restrictions it was the right time to get the fundraising wheel turning once more.

She said: “Obviously with COVID-19, fundraising has been at an all time low. Since restrictions have been lifted, we’ve taken the opportunity to raise awareness and let everyone have a fun-filled afternoon at the same time.”

Of course, it’s not easy to organise such a large community event but Abigail said with the support she’s had from friends, family, and local businesses any bumps in the road have been ‘overcome with a good bit of teamwork’.

“It’s been an experience, and a learning curve but overall a positive time – especially in doing it in less than a month,” she said.

“We’ve had a lot of support along the way, especially from friends, families and businesses. We’ve had a couple of hiccups along the way but they’ve been overcome with a good bit of teamwork.”

Abigail said: “We’ve had many amazing donations, we simply asked around and had an extremely overwhelming response.

“We’re humbled by everybody’s generosity and good luck wishes and just want to thank everybody for their kindness and support, it’s been a pleasure.”

The August Bank Holiday family fun day takes place on Monday, August 30, at St Benedict’s rugby club, in Whitehaven, between 12 and 4pm.
