The Liberal Democrats have won the by-election for a Penrith Town Council seat.

Barbara Jayson was elected to the Penrith South Ward seat on the Town Council on Thursday, March, 12.

Westmorland and Lonsdale Liberal Democrats MP Tim Farron said: “Congratulations to Councillor Barbara Jayson – a fantastic result despite the utterly shocking weather.”

The result of the Penrith South Ward by-election for Westmorland and Furness Council held on Thursday, March, 12 2026 has been declared as follows:

• JAYSON, Barbara, Liberal Democrats, 749 Votes (Elected)
• HOUSTON, Michael John, ReformUK – 588 Votes
• HOFFMANN, Emilia Louise, The Green Party – 225 Votes
• TOLMIE, Maiki, The Conservative and Unionist Party – 173 Votes

Turnout – 23.51 percent
Number of ballots rejected – 4
