With dark days and cold weather, not to mention the dread of bills thudding on the mat, January can be a tough time for many of us.
Whatever resolutions we make, trying to juggle competing demands can be that final straw for finances, wellbeing and relationships.
That’s why it’s also one of the busiest times of year for one of our most valued support services, who are keen to remind South Lakes residents: “you are not on your own”.

South Lakes Citizens Advice is part of a nationwide network of local, not for profit charities funded entirely by grants and donations.
Drop-in sessions and appointments are in accessible Kendal town centre premises, in Wainwright’s Yard.
The only charity to offer a free, confidential and comprehensive advice service on a wide range of topics including debt, welfare benefits, employment, housing, relationships and much more, the charity provides a vital first port of call for people in need or crisis.
They also provide outreach community services at the Windermere and District Foodbank on a Friday.
“With still a lot of winter to go, there’s enormous strain on people- financially, emotionally, and practically,” says Karen Evans, Chief Officer at South Lakes Citizens Advice.

“Our message is simple: don’t feel you have to struggle alone this New Year weighed down by avoidable problems.
“Whether it’s budgeting, housing, benefits entitlement, energy costs, or simply understanding your options, we’re right here to help.”
That’s proven by the record numbers contacting the charity last year.
They’ve helped around 2,900 South Lakes residents, raising £1.7 million in financial gains: gains which local people spend, thereby boosting the local economy.
As committed as ever about being that first, accessible lifeline, Karen is pleased to announce that South Lakes Citizens Advice in partnership with Sheffield Citizens Advice will be running a pilot BSL/DEAF Advice Service.
This service is also available to local people in Allerdale and is run on a Friday by appointment.

Karen and her team of dedicated staff and volunteers are determined to rise to the continued challenge of tough times: “Any one of us could need help at any time- for example, we’re seeing increasing referrals to foodbanks, a hidden regional statistic,” says Karen.
“People often assume we’re a government body, we’re not: we’re funded by an annual grant from Westmorland and Furness Council, Town Council and generous donations from local businesses and citizens.
“We also could not operate without our amazing volunteers, and with need still rising, we always need more! We have roles in all areas, from admin and advice to fundraising funds.
“So, if you have six hours a week to spare and expertise or enthusiasm to share, you’ll find a very warm welcome in our lovely office, and it’s incredibly fulfilling.”
