Man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after pedestrian in hit by van

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a pedestrian was hit by a van and left in a critical condition.

At 2:50pm on Sunday, January 4, police responded to reports a pedestrian had been hit by a van in Carlisle. 

Police and emergency services attended the scene on Prescott Road where a pedestrian, a man in his 30s, was taken to hospital via ambulance.

The pedestrian remains in hospital in a critical, but stable, condition.

Police investigating an incident arrested a 29-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder.

He remains in police custody.

The van involved has also been recovered.

Detectives are continuing to appeal for anyone with any information to come forward.

A spokesperson for Cumbria Police said: “Officers are particularly keen for anyone who was in the Prescott Road area, and surrounding areas, at the time of the incident (2:50pm on 4 January) to check any CCTV, dashcam or doorbell footage which may be relevant to the investigation.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact police via 101.

“Residents may see an increased police presence in the area while officers conduct enquiries.”
