Rowan tree replanted in memory of murdered Lucy Sands

The Mayor of Workington was joined by councillors, members of the public and film makers to replant a rowan tree in memory of murdered Victorian Lucy Sands.

On December 1, 1881, Lucy Sands left home to meet her friends in town but tragically never returned.

On the 144th anniversary, the Mayor of Workington Councillor David Farrar had replanted a rowan tree near the site where 16-year-old Lucy Sands’ body was found three months later in March 1882.

The film makers of The Ballard of Lucy Sands, councilors and members of the public were also present at the planting.

A rowan tree, planted in the 1883, stood here in her memory, but for reasons unknown it is no longer there.

The replanting honours Lucy once again and ensures her story is not forgotten.
