Cockermouth is a finalist in the national DogFriendly Awards after being nominated as one of the country’s most dog friendly towns.
The community will go paw to paw with Cumbrian neighbour Keswick and Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk at a ceremony at The Kennel Club headquarters in London on Thursday, November 20, 2025.

The DogFriendly Awards are an opportunity to recognise and reward dog friendly places and pet businesses that go the extra mile for the benefit of the UK’s 12.5 million dogs and their owners.
Winners of the DogFriendly Awards in each of the categories are chosen by public vote.
The town’s entry in to the competition was made by Cockermouth & District Chamber of Trade.
Co-chair of the Chamber, Joe Murray said: “We are chuffed to bits to make the finals of this competition and we can’t wait to travel to London for the awards ceremony.
“We know we are up against some tough competition.
“Keswick has a great reputation for welcoming dogs and Bury St Edmunds won the title in 2024 but we hope we have a strong chance.
“With two fabulous pet stores, groomers and a good veterinary surgery, loads of shops, pubs and restaurants, and plenty of holiday accommodation which welcome four-legged visitors, we know from personal experience that Cockermouth is a great place to bring your dog.
“There’s even The Vicky shared workspace which regularly has a collie, husky or a lurcher quietly snoring as their owners take advantage of the dog-friendly venue.
“We also have countless dog walks in and around town, we’re close to lakes, beach and fells for even more adventures, and you can never take a walk through town without spotting a pup or two.
“Whatever the outcome on November 20, I hope that this nomination really raises the profile of Cockermouth.
“We know this is a brilliant place to live, work and visit – and your dogs can do that too.”
