A train has derailed near Shap causing delays as emergency services respond.
The train derailment near Shap in Cumbria, was reported to National Rail at 6:29am on Monday, November 3.
Emergency Services have been dispatched to the incident with a spokesperson for the North West Ambulance service said: “We are currently assessing the situation and working with other members of the emergency services.
“Our priority is to ensure people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible.”
National Rail are reporting that the derailment between Penrith and Oxenholme will cause major disruption that is expected to last until the end of the day.
Avanti West Coast have advised that all lines are blocked north of Preston and have asked: “Please do not attempt to travel north of Preston today.”
They have also advised customers with tickets for journeys north of Preston dated 3 November will be able to use their tickets tomorrow (4 November) on any Avanti West Coast service via the same route.
There is also a ticket acceptance in place on alternative routes with the following operators:
- Between London Kings Cross and Edinburgh with London North Eastern Railway
- Between Edinburgh and Glasgow Central with ScotRail
- Between Edinburgh and Birmingham New Street with CrossCountry trains
- Between Carlisle and Newcastle, as well as acceptance between Preston and York/Manchester with Northern Rail
- Between Preston and Carlisle/Edinburgh with TransPennine Express Trains
They have also explained that if you abandoned your journey as a result of the disruption, then you can claim a fee free refund from where you bought your ticket.
If you continued with your journey but were delayed by 15 minutes or more, you can claim Delay Repay compensation from the train company you travelled with.
Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron has released a statement saying: “I’m deeply concerned to hear the news coming out of Shap this morning.
“My thoughts are with everyone on board the train and the emergency service workers who are now on the scene.”
British Transport Police have confirmed that “there are no reported casualties and passengers have been escorted from the train.”
Officers will remain with the other emergency services as they continue their response to the derailment.
