St Bees School’s Cumbrian Award continues Archbishop Edmund Grindal’s vision for education

St Bees School is proud to reaffirm its commitment to supporting the local community and continue the legacy of Archbishop Edmund Grindal through the Cumbrian Award.

The means-tested bursary scheme offers up to a 50 percent reduction in school fees.

The award is designed specifically for children from across West Cumbria and reflects the school’s long-standing mission of ensuring that a St Bees education remains within reach of local families.

By reducing financial barriers, the Cumbrian Award aims to open opportunities for students to access the wide-ranging benefits of a St Bees education, from academic excellence and leadership opportunities to personal growth and global connections.

Founded in 1583 by Archbishop Edmund Grindal, St Bees School was established to provide education for the children of Copeland.

More than four centuries later, the school continues to honour that vision.

The Cumbrian Award plays a vital role in carrying forward this tradition, offering local students the chance to thrive in a supportive, forward-thinking environment while keeping the school firmly rooted in its community.

Laurence Gribble, Head of St Bees School, said: “The Cumbrian Award is central to who we are as a school.

“It represents our heritage and our ongoing promise to the community, that St Bees remains a place where local children can thrive, regardless of financial circumstance.

“We are proud to continue Archbishop Grindal’s vision and to support families across Cumbria through this bursary.

“By investing in young people here in West Cumbria, we are investing in the future of our community and its ability to flourish.”

In recent years, St Bees has developed a reputation as a school that combines traditional values with a global outlook.

While pupils benefit from the school’s unique international partnerships and innovative learning experiences, the heart of St Bees remains firmly in Cumbria.

The Cumbrian Award is one of the key ways the school demonstrates its commitment to giving back to the region that has shaped its history.

Families who are interested in applying for the Cumbrian Award are encouraged to reach out to the school’s admissions team.

The bursary is means-tested to ensure that support is provided fairly and effectively, with the goal of making a St Bees education accessible to as many local children as possible.
