Cumbria’s rugby union sides provided plenty of fight across the Regional and County divisions as Aspatria, Penrith and Carlisle the top Cumbrian teams in each division.

Regional 1 North East

The second weekend of Regional 1 North East action produced some eye-catching scorelines on Saturday, with Blaydon and Heath both racking up emphatic victories while Penrith came out on top in a dramatic contest against Harrogate.

Alnwick opened their home campaign in style with a convincing 42–17 win over York, showing attacking intent throughout and punishing their visitors with a dominant second half display.

At Crow Trees, Blaydon turned on the power to overwhelm Cleckheaton 64–5, crossing freely in a one-sided encounter that underlined their credentials at the top end of the table.

There was late drama at Mint Bridge, where Ilkley edged Kendal 27–23 in a close-fought contest.

The hosts pushed hard but Ilkley’s clinical finishing proved the difference as they held out under pressure.

In Teesside, Driffield made it two wins from two with a 34–20 triumph at Middlesbrough, continuing their strong early season form.

The tightest clash of the afternoon came at Winters Park, where Penrith held off Harrogate 26–24.

The Cumbrians showed plenty of character in defence as Harrogate chased the game late on, but the home side held firm for a memorable victory.

Rounding off the action, Heath ran riot at Sandal, powering to a 49–12 away win in a commanding display that leaves them among the early pacesetters.

Regional 2 North

It was another dramatic weekend in Regional 2 North, with tight battles across Cumbria and the North East alongside some high-scoring clashes.

Aspatria claimed the bragging rights in their Cumbrian derby with Keswick, edging a tense encounter 23–20 at Bower Park.

In a game of fine margins, the Black Reds held their nerve late on to secure their second win of the campaign.

In Newcastle, Northern produced a strong display to see off West Hartlepool 38–24, showing sharp attacking intent to pull clear in the second half.

Another thriller unfolded on Tyneside where Percy Park triumphed 38–32 over Durham City.

The visitors kept the scoreboard ticking but Park’s cutting edge in the backs proved decisive in a free-flowing contest.

Sunderland were in rampant form at Ashbrooke, running in tries at will to overwhelm Consett 50–19.

The home side dominated throughout, laying down a marker as one of the division’s early pacesetters.

There was more success for the Cumbrians as Upper Eden defeated Morpeth 32–22.

A strong forward effort paved the way for the hosts, who kept their composure to close out the game in the final quarter.

Meanwhile, Guisborough earned a hard-fought 16–5 win away at Wigton, keeping the home side largely at bay in a tight defensive battle.

Cumbria

The Cumbria season produced another lively round of fixtures on Saturday, with several dominant displays and some hard fought encounters across the county.

Hawcoat Park made the trip to Cockermouth and came away with a solid 30–11 victory as they steadily pulled clear after a competitive opening spell.

At Davidson Park, Carlisle were in ruthless mood, running in a host of tries to crush Keswick 2nds 72–7.

The city side’s attacking pace and power proved far too much for their hosts.

Kirkby Lonsdale were equally emphatic on home soil, sweeping past Egremont 67–7. The South Lakeland outfit cut loose, underlining their experience and strength in depth.

Millom also enjoyed a convincing home success, overcoming Penrith 2nds 33–7 in a physical encounter where the Furness club’s pack gave them the platform to dominate.

In Whitehaven, the hosts delivered a commanding 40–0 shutout of Creighton, producing an all-round performance that combined sharp finishing with rock-solid defence.

The closest contest of the day came at St Benedict’s, where the hosts edged past Windermere 27–17.

Both sides showed plenty of intent, but Benedict’s extra cutting edge in attack proved decisive.
