Whitehaven will celebrate one of Cumbria’s most famous traditions as the town hosts its first ever Rum Butter Festival.
The one-day event on Saturday, September 13, runs from 10am to 5pm in Castle Park and promises a family-friendly mix of food, history and entertainment, all built around the delicacy that put West Cumbria on the culinary map.
Organised by TEG retail the day will kick off at 10 with an opening speech from the Town Cryer.
Through out the day there will be a live cookery demonstration from chef Jon Fell, pirate stories by Helen Sharpe and the Solway Shanty Crew will be performing.
There is pirate themed fun and a treasure hunt around the park to keep younger visitors entertained.

A TEG retail event is nothing without its bustling market with more than 20 local traders and artisan producers, bringing food, crafts and gifts to the town.
For those inspired by the spirit entries for the Best Rum Butter and Best Rum Butter Bake can be brought between 11-2.
Rum butter has deep roots in Whitehaven. The port’s strong links with the Caribbean rum trade in the 17th and 18th centuries helped inspire the rich, spiced spread of butter, sugar and rum that became a hallmark of local christenings, weddings and celebrations. Now, for the first time, the town is dedicating a festival to it.
The event is free to attend, with plenty on offer for families, food lovers and those curious about the town’s heritage.
With its combination of history, local flavours and family activities, the Rum Butter Festival looks set to become a fitting new tradition for Whitehaven and one that, much like its namesake, will leave a sweet taste behind.
