Adobe Women’s FA Cup: Carlisle United and Penrith AFC progress as battling Whitehaven AFC go out

It was another magical round in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup as Carlisle United Ladies, Penrith AFC Ladies and Whitehaven AFC Ladies in action.

Cumbrian football enjoyed a memorable afternoon in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup First Qualifying Round with Penrith AFC Ladies and Carlisle United Ladies both securing their place in the next round.

Whitehaven AFC, however, bowed out narrowly after a battling display.

At Frenchfield Park, Penrith produced one of the most eye-catching results of the day, dismantling Boro Rangers in a remarkable 15–0 victory.

The home side were ruthless in attack, scoring almost at will to register one of the biggest scorelines across the country.

Their clinical display leaves them brimming with confidence ahead of the Second Round Qualifying.

Carlisle United Ladies showed their resilience on the road at Northallerton Town.

Bessie Best’s strike had given them the lead, only for the hosts to level deep into stoppage time.

Just when extra-time looked inevitable, Phoebe Langan struck a dramatic late winner to seal a 2–1 triumph and spark jubilant celebrations.

There was disappointment for Whitehaven AFC, who were edged out 1–0 at home by Redcar Town.

Abi Foy’s first-half goal proved decisive, though Whitehaven kept themselves in contention until the end.

A penalty from a straight red car could have extended their Cup journey, but Redcar goalkeeper Ellie Randall pulled off a crucial save to secure her side’s progression.

It was a busy weekend of Cup action across the country, with shocks, thrillers and high-scoring ties lighting up the competition.

Atherton Laburnum Rovers came from behind to defeat Wirral United 2–1, thanks to a brace from Shannon Gill while Needham Market advanced with a composed 2–0 victory over Newmarket Town, courtesy of Annie Posnett and Jae Lewis-Samuel.

Bishops Cleeve overcame Cirencester Town 2–0, with Leonie Gough and Jess Stirling on target.

In Devon, Tiverton Town edged a seven-goal thriller, defeating Redruth United 4–3 after a dramatic late penalty. Costessey Sports impressed with a 5–3 win against Brightlingsea Regent, while Gateshead Leam Rangers swept past Harrogate Railway 5–2.

Elsewhere, Ross Juniors beat Hereford Pegasus 3–2, Millbrook Ladies edged Three Bridges 3–2, and Havant & Waterlooville ran out 5–3 winners against Bognor Regis thanks to a brace from Chelsie Hay.

Eastbourne Borough recorded a solid 2–0 win over Hastings United, and Camden Town progressed with a tight 1–0 victory over Frontiers, sealed by Connie Howarth’s strike.

The Second Round Qualifying takes place on Sunday, 21 September, when Penrith AFC head to Carlisle United with both sides hoping to carry Cumbrian hopes forward after their first qualifying round triumphs.

Both sides will be eager to maintain momentum as the road to Wembley continues, while Whitehaven will now refocus on their Lancashire Women’s league campaign.
