During his time in Staffordshire, he clocked up 31 appearances, notching four goals and four assists in his limited game time.

In January of last year, he was loaned out to The SO Legal Stadium for a second spell at Barrow.

During the second half of the 2024/2025 season, he played 17 times, contributing towards seven goals.

Speaking about re-joining Barrow, he said: “I’m delighted to be back for good, that’s the main thing, and to sign for two years, yeah, I’m absolutely delighted.”

Whitfield originally joined The Bluebirds in the summer of 2022 from Stockport County on a two-year deal, and the tricky winger went on to make 91 appearances for Barrow while scoring 17 goals and providing 16 assists before leaving to join Burton Albion.

The Yorkshire-born winger began his youth career at Bradford City, where he was released at the age of 16.

A move to Guisley followed before Premier League side AFC Bournemouth snapped up the then 17-year-old.

Successful loan spells to Kidderminster Harriers and Yeovil Town followed before the youngster really made a name for himself at Port Vale.

Originally joining Vale on loan in the summer of 2017, Whitfield impressed in his first season at Vale Park, making 37 appearances while contributing to a combined seven goals and assists.

Vale opted to make the move permanent in the summer of 2018, and after another four-goal season in League Two, Whitfield moved to National League side Torquay United.

During his spell on the South Coast, Whitfield bagged 12 goals in 57 appearances, which caught the attention of Stockport County, where, following one season at Edgeley Park, he gained promotion to the Football League.

The following summer, a move to The Bluebirds followed, where Whitfield lit up Holker Street over the following two seasons.

The Bluebirds are on the road to The Jobserve Community Stadium on Saturday, August 23, as they look to get their League Tow campaign back on track against Colchester United.
