A spokesperson for Penrith Mountain Rescue said: “Due to the call dropping out we were only able to establish a rough location in the Geltsdale area, close to Tarnmonath Fell. After the original call we had been unable to get in contact with the casualty due to poor phone signal, and hence could not use our Phonefind technology.”

With limited information the team opted to split and approach from two different directions in order cover more ground, one group heading in from Forest Head and the other from Geltsdale.

The spokesperson added: “As we reached our starting points we were able to establish, through talking with a local farmer and subsequently a phone call to the casualty, that he had been found by two walkers who had fed him, helped him walk off the fell and then driven him to his car.

“Before we returned, we came across one of the walkers who was able to confirm this.

“We are deeply appreciative to them for assisting the casualty and helping him from the fell.”
