Violent incident at derelict Cumbria hotel under investigation amid false asylum rumours

Detectives are investigating a violent altercation near the derelict hotel in Cumbria, which left four men injured and has fuelled false rumours linking the site to asylum seekers.

Detectives launched an investigation into a robbery and assault that was reported to have taken place in the area surrounding the derelict Gilsland Spa Hotel.

The incident was believed to have involved two groups of men.

Four people were injured during the incident, and a vehicle was also reported to have been damaged.

The hotel, located in Cumbria, remained derelict.

Police confirmed this is contrary to speculation that had circulated, there was no information to support claims that the site was being used — or was intended to be used — as accommodation for asylum seekers.

Police have launched an appeal for anyone with information to come forward.
