‘Dangerous offender’ who subjected victims ‘horrific abuse’ jailed for 24 years

A Carlisle man who police described as a ‘dangerous offender’ was jailed at Newcastle Crown Court.

Carl Van Wyk, 55, of Carlisle, subjected his victims to “horrific abuse over a long period of time”, a court heard.

The offences took place between 2015 and 2022 and they include offences of rape, sexual assault and making indecent images.

Detective Constable Rebecca Lynch from Cumberland CID said: “Van Wyk is a dangerous offender and subjected his victims to horrific abuse over a long period of time.

“We would like to thank the victims for their bravery throughout this investigation as well as those that assisted us in reaching the verdict.

“We hope this sentencing provides reassurance to victims that action will be taken against dangerous offenders to bring them to justice.

Wyk was sentenced to 24 years on Tuesday, July 29, for 20 sex offences.

He was found guilty of the offences at Newcastle Crown Court on June 19, 2025 following a trial.
