The Atoms as the Egremont based side are known was formed in 1950 by a group of Windscale Nuclear Plant workers.

Membership to the West Cumberland Senior League was accepted in the late 50s under the name Windscale Rovers.
A move to their current Faclon Club home happened with the team playing their first game in the 1960/61 season.
A change of league followed to the Derwent Valley Senior League with a second team, Windscale United, being formed and competing in the West Cumberland Senior League.
The Rovers side was disbanded when the Derwent Valley Senior League folded.
Windscale United continued with their first silverware coming against Egremont Town in the Whitehaven Cup.
The club were a founding member of the Egremont and District Sunday League in 1971, the youth section was formed in 1989 by ex-player Keith Benbow, and has since provided a steady stream of young players.
Entry into the Wearside League was gained for the 1990/91 season with success following as the club claimed every trophy on offer except the Shipowners Cup and League title.

The Atoms most recent success came in 2024 with a 3-2 win over Richmond Town in The Alan Hood Charity Cup.
The club currently operates sides from Under 7s through to Senior sides.
They added “The Wheatsheaf Egremont is our main home kit sponsor this season with M&I Travel Ltd our 2nd sponsor.
