Cumbria Bowling Championship: Wigton Bowling Club to host day one of finals with ten titles up for grabs

Wigton Bowling Club will be hosting the first day of Cumbria Bowling’s County finals with ten titles up for grabs.

On Saturday, July 26, players from around Cumbria will descend on Wigton as they hope to claim one of the ten titles they have worked towards.

For seven of the winners they will claim their place at the Bowls England national finals at Royal Leamington Spa.

Opening the days competition at 10am three of the national finals places will be decided with either the quartet of R. Corkill, I. Gaythwaite, R. Prince and J. Walker of Whitehaven or S. Brough, R. Orchard, L. Parker and P. Wallace of Silloth in the Men’s Fours.

While in the Men’s Junior Singles D. Wilson of Aspatria faces T. Johnston of Courtfield with one of them flying the flag for Cumbria at the national finals.

In the Women’s Pairs it will be a Workington duo that heads south but will it be V. Cook and R. Forster or T. Smitham and N. Fleet.

Two Cumbria titles are also on offer in the morning session with the Women’s Secretaries and Treasurers Singles being played between L. Metcalfe of Appleby and S. Balfour of Carlisle Subscription.

In the Men’s Restricted Singles F. Tinnion of Workington will be looking to make it the clubs second trophy of the day as he faces D. Blackmore of Whitehaven.

The afternoon session is due to start at 1pm (13:00) with four national finals places on offer.

Whitehaven’s R. Preston, L. Clarke, I. Blenkinsop and J. Walker face I. Brown, C. Horsfield, P. Campbell and S. Carswell of Courtfield in the Senior Fours.

Back in action after the Men’s Junior Singles T. Johnston is joined by Silloth’s J. Scott as they battle it out against Aspatria’s H. Creighton and J. Wilson in the Men’s Junior Pairs.

Workington’s T. Smitham faces L. Rose of Whitehaven in the Women’s Two Woods.

Home club Wigton will be cheering on C. Browbank, M. Haney and N. Bowe in the Women’s Triples when they face Workington’s V. Cook, C. Bannister and R. Forster.

In the final session at around 3pm (15:00) Whitehaven’s L. Clarke takes on Carlisle Subscription’s L. Kelly in the Men’s Secretaries and Treasurers Singles.
