Barrow and Furness MP will join motorcyclist as they remember Hairy Biker Dave Myers

Barrow and Furness’s motorcycling MP Michelle Scrogham will be climbing into the saddle to mark Dave Day.

Dave Myers, the town’s home-grown Hairy Biker and TV celebrity chef, who died from cancer aged 66 in February 2024, is expected to be saluted by thousands of fellow bikers for the second year in a row.

Dave Day will run from tomorrow until Sunday for a weekend packed with events.

Mrs Scrogham attended the colourful celebration of the Barrovian’s life last year when locals mixed with a multitude of bikers who travelled from as far afield as London – many of them arriving on motorcycles of different makes.

Mrs Scrogham, who rides a BMW s1000XR, said: “Dave Myers was a smashing man who helped to put Barrow on the map.

“He never forgot his roots and he never lost his Barrow accent as he went to the top of the TV popularity charts along with his mate Si King.”

When Mr Myers learned of the gravity of his illness, he made plans for his own funeral and said he hoped to be remembered as someone “who had a go.”

“He certainly did that,” added Mrs Scrogham.

“After growing up in Devon Street he became one of the best-loved figures on English television and he is fondly remembered by all those who knew him.”

Mr Myers was educated at Barrow Grammar School before studying fine art at Goldsmiths, University of London, where he obtained an MA in art history.

Among the celebrations will be the Dave Day Charity Concert on Market Street car park, outside the town hall, from 4pm.
