Over seven hour search and rescue ends as Coast to Coast walker found deceased

An over seven hour search and rescue call-out for Cockermouth Mountain Rescue had a sad ending as a Coast to Coast walker was found dead.

The Cockermouth Mountain Rescue team was called out late on Monday, June 9, following reports that a walker on day two of their coast to coast trip had not arrived at their accommodation in Borrowdale.

Given the conditions, a search was initiated along the various coast to coast routes, with focus on the confusing ground between Ennerdale and Honister Pass.

The weather was atrocious and at points the Team was unable to cross normally benign streams due to the high volumes of fast moving water.

At approximately 02:30pm the Team found the missing person, tragically deceased on Moses Trod below Brandreth.

A spokesperson for Cockermouth Mountain Rescue said: “The Team’s thoughts go to the casualty and their friends and relatives.”

Additional resources made their way to the scene, and as dawn broke the casualty was evacuated by stretcher to Honister Slate Mine.
