Workington Town Council opens new tennis courts during Party in the Park

Workington Town Council is delighted to announce the official opening of the town’s new tennis courts.

The three courts were officially opened at this year’s Party in the Park event on Saturday, June 7, with the Mayor of Workington, Councillor David Farrar, doing the honour with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

During the Party in the Park the courts were showcased with fun tennis activities led by coaches from Cumbria Tennis.

Councillor David Farrar, Mayor of Workington said: “I am delighted to see the new tennis courts open and can’t wait to see our community making full use of the new facilities.

“This development forms part of the Council’s ongoing commitment to enhancing recreational facilities within the town and promoting active lifestyles among residents.”

The three new courts are available to book from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm daily at a rate of £4 per hour with Tennis enthusiasts able to take advantage of an annual membership for just £25.

The booking system will allow reservations up to two weeks in advance through the Workington Town Council website here

Upon booking, participants will receive a unique gate code via email providing access to the courts for their reserved time slot.

Players will need to provide their own equipment.

The project is part of a £30 million nationwide investment by the UK Government and LTA Tennis Foundation, delivered by the LTA, to refurbish public tennis courts across Great Britain, and open up the sport to many more people.

This investment is seeing thousands of existing park tennis courts in poor or unplayable condition brought back to life for the benefit of communities across the country through renovation works, and improved court accessibility with new gate-access technology and booking systems.

Over 2500 courts have been completed so far as part of the project.

Scott Lloyd, LTA Chief Executive, said: “We’re delighted to see park tennis courts in Workington officially re-open to the public, and in better shape than ever.

“Park tennis courts are vital for providing people with opportunities to pick up a racket, and we want as many people as possible, of all ages, abilities and backgrounds, to enjoy playing tennis and being active.

“Thanks to this investment the sport will be opened up to more players, for years to come.”

Cumberland Council contributed to the funding for this project.

There will be a Free Park Tennis session ran every Saturday morning from 10am – 11pm by a Cumbria Tennis Coach, plus sessions for schools, rusty rackets, cardio and lots more.
