The Phoenix Enterprise Centre is marking a major milestone as the organisation celebrates 40 years of powering enterprise, transforming communities, and giving voice to those most in need.
From its early beginnings in May 1985, Phoenix Enterprise Centre has grown into a vital hub for business entrepreneurship and community engagement in Cleator Moor and West Cumbria.
“We are immensely proud of the journey we’ve taken over the past four decades.” says Joanne Crowe, Executive Director of PEC.
“We’ve always believed that’s economic development and social responsibility go hand in hand, and our track record proves it.”

Known as ‘The Business Centre with a Community Voice,’ Phoenix Enterprise Centre has repurposed some of the area’s iconic buildings, including the former council offices and the old historic Co-op building.
Turning them into a thriving enterprise centre, now home to a diverse range of local entrepreneurs and growing companies, many of which have been with them for decades.

The Phoenix Enterprise Centre’s impact goes far beyond bricks and mortar.
Its commitment to social value has touched the lives of hundreds of residents through employment support, digital access, food relief, and financial advice.
From helping job seekers get back into work, to providing free access to computers, to distributing emergency food bags through its DAAFS project, Phoenix Enterprise Centre stands as a beacon of hope and opportunity.
To mark this significant anniversary, Phoenix Enterprise Centre will be hosting a celebratory event in June and will be joined by tenants, stakeholders, funders and employees.
A Volunteer Board Steered by Passion and Purpose
The Phoenix Enterprise Centre’s success is made possible by the dedication of its volunteer Board of Directors – local individuals who give their time, expertise, and passion to help steer the organisation.
Their vision, governance, and oversight have helped Phoenix Enterprise Centre stay grounded in its values while adapting to the changing needs of the community.
“We’re proud to have a Board made up of local people who genuinely care about Cleator Moor and its future.” says Bob Metcalfe, Chair of Phoenix Enterprise Centre’s Board.
“The Boards commitment ensures we remain accountable, innovative, and rooted in the community we serve.”

Looking Ahead with Purpose
As Phoenix Enterprise Centre reflects on 40 years of growth and resilience, the Centre is also looking ahead with renewed purpose.
With new developments on the horizon and a growing demand for affordable office accommodation, Phoenix Enterprise Centre is committed to remaining a driving force for regeneration in West Cumbria.
Additional workspace will be available later in the year upon completion of the Phoenix Court Phase 3 premises as part of the Cleator Moor Town Deal – Revitalised Town.
“We want to make sure Phoenix Enterprise Centre is no longer the best-kept secret in Cumbria,” adds Joanne Crowe.
“Our doors are open – whether you’re a business looking for a base with character and support, or a family needing a little help to get back on track.”
