A Kendal man has been jailed after a knife attack left his victim in intensive care with serious injures.

A court heard how Daniel West, 22, from Kendal, met two men on the evening of November 3, 2024.

West had met them with the intention to sell £40 worth of cocaine.

However, the court heard how West had expected to be only meeting one man and when two arrived, he pulled out a nine-inch kitchen knife which was hidden in his trousers.

West then stabbed one of the men in the chest.

A 22-year-old has been jailed today (May 23) after stabbing a man in the street in Kendal.

Emergency were called at 11.46pm and the victim was taken to hospital by air ambulance.

Cumbria Police officers then located and arrested West.

A search of West’s home resulted in the recovery of a nine-inch knife, hidden at the back of a wardrobe and wrapped in clothing.

There was blood on the blade which subsequent tests would show was that of the victim, the court heard.

West was interviewed but gave no comment responses throughout.

The victim suffered serious injuries and was treated in an Intensive Care Unit, spending some time in a coma.

West then admitted grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a bladed article.

The 22-year-old was sentenced to one year six months.

Detective Constable Ewan Breeze said: “Any attack with a knife has a strong possibility of ending in tragedy.

“In this case, West can thank the quick response of NWAS and the expertise of hospital staff for not facing more serious charges and a significantly longer period of imprisonment.

“Carrying a knife with the intention of potentially using it to attack someone on the streets of Cumbria is indefensible.

“The police and courts treat such incidents extremely seriously and we hope this incident serves as a warning as to the consequences for anyone who thinks they can use a knife on the streets of Cumbria to carry out an assault.”
