Muncaster Sausage Festival a ‘brilliant weekend celebrating creativity, local food, and community spirit’ as new Sausage Champion crowned

A “brilliant weekend celebrating creativity, local food, and community spirit” at Muncaster Castle’s Sausage Festival ended after three days of sizzling competition with Bewleys Sausage being crowned Sausage Champion 2025.

Held over the bank holiday weekend May 3-5, at Muncaster Castle, Sausage Festival 2025 brought together top producers, enthusiastic foodies, and families from across the region.

The seven sausage competition entries

Muncaster’s Sausage Master oversaw proceedings on the weekend proclaiming: “We all love sausages.

“It’s been a brilliant weekend celebrating creativity, local food, and community spirit.

“It was a tightly fought competition with a wide variety of tastes for the public to choose from.”

Each day, visitors sampled entries from local butchers and artisan makers during the dedicated Sausage Tasting Session before casting their votes at the Sausage Monument

While each day saw a different crowd favourite with Melville Tyson claiming Day 1, Bewleys Sausage taking Day 2 and The Cumbrian Boerewors Co. On Day 3.

The votes from the whole weekend were totalled and the overall champion was announced on Monday, May 5, by the Sausage Master.

The Golden Sausage Trophy was presented by Iona Frost-Pennington to Bewleys Company Owner Katherine Steward.

The 2025 Champion Katherine Steward, Bewleys Sausage Company Owner said: “It was a real privilege to showcase our traditional Bewleys Cumberland Sausage alongside an incredible mix of producers from around the world.

“We’re proud to carry on the heritage using only the finest local ingredients—and even prouder to win.

“Thanks to the Muncaster team for a brilliant event. See you next year.”

This year it wasn’t just about eating sausages with a full programme of entertainment, music, and a standout Sausage-Shaped Dog Competition, sponsored by Pooch’s Handmade Dog Treats, ensuring there was something for everyone.

Along with the Sausage Shaped Dogs there was also Sausage Racing, high-speed fun with inflatable sausages and fearless teams; Sausage Tossing – testing skill, accuracy, and a good sense of humour and a Bangers & Dash event, a light-hearted obstacle course that got everyone cheering.

Visitors also explored the Crafted in Cumbria craft stalls, where local makers showcased handmade gifts, art, textiles, and more.

The vibrant marketplace was enjoyed by festivalgoers looking to take a little bit of Cumbria home with them.
