Poppy Atkinson Cup: Westmorland FA rename cup final in memory of little girl who died in Kendal crash

The Westmorland FA have announced that they are renaming the U12 Girls cup final in memory of Poppy Atkinson.

On Wednesday, march 5, police and emergency services were called following a report of a crash involving a car and two children.

The incident occurred on a pitch at Kendal Rugby Union Football Club on Shap Road.

One of the children involved in the crash died – ten-year-old Poppy Atkinson, from Kendal.

Poppy represented both Kendal United teams competing in this season’s final.

In memory of Poppy the Under 12 Girls County Cup will now be known as the Poppy Atkinson Cup.

James Pattison, Westmorland County FA Chief Executive Officer said: “As a County FA we wanted to honour Poppy’s life and ensure her legacy carries on and are very proud to rename the Under 12 Girls Cup the Poppy Atkinson Cup in her memory.

“Hearing about her love and passion for the game combined with her brilliant talent has touched us all.

“Poppy can be inspiring for young female players for generations to come.”

Poppy’s family have chosen the walk out song for the final which is to be played on Sunday, April 27, and have chosen Katy Perry’s Firework.
