Carlisle United: Blues relegated to National Conference after Tranmere win

Carlisle United’s relegation to the National Conference was confirmed with Tranmere’s win against Crewe.

The Blues will be joining Morecambe in the National League after almost two decades in the Football League.

This is only the second time in the clubs history that they will not be playing in the Football League since joining in 1928.

A Tom Davies header in the 22 minute and a 87 minute Kristian Dennis goal gave Tranmere the three points and the position in League Two for the 2025/26 season.

Mark Hughes Cumbrians were given a glimmer of hope when Matty Dennis opened the scoring against Cheltenham but an equaliser from the penalty spot by Jordan Thomas and then an Ashley Hays goal gave the home side the lead.

Georgie Kelly equalised for Carlisle in the 73 minute but George Miller made it 3-2 to Cheltenham in the 93 minute.

Next season will possibly see the side face other former Football League stalwarts Rochdale, Oldham, Southend, Yeovil and Hartlepool.

They will face Truro, a 878 mile round trip, and Brackley for the time in the league.

The Blues will be looking to go out on a high though with a final league game at home to Salford City on May 3.
