Anti-Racist Cumbria, Unite and Green Party back ‘emergency demo’ after Supreme Court Trans women ruling

Anti-Racist Cumbria, the Green Party in Carlisle, and Unite are among the organisations and charities backing an emergency demo to protest the Supreme Court ruling on Trans women.

On Sunday, April 27, an emergency demo is going ahead in Carlisle between 2pm and 3pm to protest for Trans rights.

This comes after the recent Supreme Court ruling that defined ‘woman’ and ‘sex’ as biological in the context of The Equality Act.

Anti-Racist Cumbria has said they back the protest alongside Queer Cumbria, Outreach Cumbria – LGBT ,The National Education Union in Cumbria, UCU at UoC, the local Green Party, and the Local Unite the union Community.

In a statement a spokesperson for Anti-Racist Cumbria said: “Last week we came out to express our deep concern about the recent Supreme Court Ruling which defined ‘woman’ and ‘sex’ as biological in the context of The Equality Act.

“We wanted to loudly, and publicly, acknowledge the fear the news has caused and to signpost to support.

“ARC have put our name and full support behind an Emergency Demo in solidarity with the Trans community.

“It will be a peaceful, stationary protest for Trans Rights. All LGBTQ+ and allies are welcome.

“This is an anti-racist issue, and we are standing in solidarity with everyone in the Trans, intersex and non-binary community – in Cumbria and beyond.”

The peaceful protest will take place on Sunday with people congregating outside Barclays on English Street, in Carlisle at 2pm
