Carlisle United: Club ‘deeply saddened’ to learn of the passing of former player Joe Thompson

Carlisle United were ‘deeply saddened’ to learn of the passing of former player Joe Thompson at the age of 36.

The club released a statement saying: “Everybody at Carlisle United is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former player Joe Thompson.

“Joe was an inspiration to all those who knew him.

“An example of this was a talk to United’s youth team in 2020 which focused on resilience, courage and motivation.

“The club sends its condolences to his wife Chantelle, children Thailula-Lily and Athena Rae, his family and friends.”

Thompson spent the 2015/16 season at Brunton Park and scored one goal in his 17 appearances for the club.

Diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in 2013 and recovered before signing for United.

He scored an emotional goal at Plymouth to mark his return to fitness, two years since his last goal.

After leaving United, he rejoined Rochdale where he continued his career before the cancer returned in 2017.

Making another remarkable comeback, he scored the goal to save Rochdale from relegation in 2018.

He retired from football in 2019 after playing for Rochdale, Tranmere Rovers, Bury, Southport and Carlisle, going on to forge a career in the media and as a motivational speaker.

In March 2024, Thompson announced the cancer had returned for the third time and was stage four, and had sadly spread to his lungs.

Prior to kick-off in their 3-2 win against Port Vale on Friday, April 18, the club held a minute of applause in his memory.
