The Edge: Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners reveals first look around new £4.7 million coastal activity centre

The Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners has revealed a first look around the £4.7 million coastal activity centre The Edge as they take control from Thomas Armstrong Ltd.

The Edge is a three story building designed to look like a sandstone pebble that has been washed up on the harbour.

The activity centre will provide community spaces, meeting rooms, changing facilities, six public toilets, a café and 16 en-suite rooms with harbour views.

The hospitality side will be run by the Osprey Management Group that includes The Peddler in Whitehaven, The Galloping Horse and Hunday Manor Hotel.

Whitehaven and Workington MP, Josh MacAlister got a guided look around The Edge saying: “I was delighted to get a behind the scenes tour of The Edge today (Tuesday, April 15) ahead of its opening this summer.

“I can’t wait to see it open. It’s going to be a great asset for West Cumbria.

“Thanks to Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners for the preview.”

Whitehaven has a reputation for hosting talented performers from the Boof Festivals, Whitehaven Alive, the ever growing Whitehaven Pride and Eat Street Cumbria festival.

The Edge will provide another cultural space and with accommodation on site for travelling performers.

Changing rooms and showers – Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners

Already an attraction for people starting the coast to coast The Edge will look to provide access to water sports as well.

With showers and changing rooms heading out to explore the coast just got a little bit easier.

Sixteen en-suite rooms will hopefully not only make The Edge a hit with performers but with schools, universities and other groups looking for a coastal base.

While the rooms in the building have a minimal look to them the Harbour Commissioners are working, where possible, with local suppliers to furnish it.

With Brooks of Whitehaven are supplying the TVs and sound system, David Allen IT (Carlisle/Workington) is handling internet and phones, Sealy in Wigton is providing beds and mattresses, and Fidget Design in Windermere is leading the interior design.

A spokesperson for the Harbour Commissioners said: “For now, the new building smells of fresh paint and echoes with possibility, but in just a few short months it will be buzzing with the sounds and delights of harbourside life.

“We can’t wait to welcome you.”
