A new mural has mysteriously appeared on the walls of Lakes College, sparking curiosity and conversation among students and staff.
The artwork, inspired by the world-renowned street artist Banksy, is the first in a series of pieces designed to reflect the college’s core values of being Ready, Respectful, and showcasing Potential.

Iain Glendinning, Vice Principle at Lakes College, explained the importance of the initiative, saying: “The project Banksy, being run by our Art team and students, is a really positive and fun way to reinforce the college values of Ready, Respectful and Potential.
“Rather than having posters and displays saying ‘don’t do this’ or ‘don’t do that’, we are using the art to encourage students to think about the message and relate it to their own choices in being ready for learning and work, respectful to themselves, others and their environment, and ultimately realising their potential.
“At the same time, our art students are learning valuable techniques and seeing the impact that art can have in the community and for individuals.
“I believe that art should be thought provoking, and that education is about developing people, not controlling them. This project delivers on both fronts.”
The mural shows two seagulls around a bin, eating chips that have been scattered on the ground.
Hovering above the scene are the words ‘Don’t Feed the Birds’, drawing attention to the issue of littering and personal responsibility.
The idea behind these murals came after Banksy made headlines again over the summer.
The college saw this as a chance to connect with students in a creative way, bringing the values of the college into everyday conversations.
As more murals appear around the college, each will bring a new way of thinking about the college’s values of being Ready, being Respectful, and having Potential.
