Rugby Union: Rough Weekend For Cumbrian Sides As County Cup Takes Focus

Cumbria’s rugby union sides found the going tough in the regional leagues as all sides were beaten but a welcome break comes

In Regional 1 North West Anselmians and Rossendale are unbeaten at the top after four games.

Rossendale sit on top after a 50-24 win over Stockport on Saturday, September 28, while Anselmians beat Cumbrian side Kendal 52-26 as the pair stay four points clear of Newport (Salop) who were 29-23 winners against Penrith.

Moving up the table the title contenders for the last two seasons, Blackburn recorded a 96-7 win over Birkenhead Park as Wirral were 45-12 victors over Leek and Manchester came back from Stoke on Trent with a 15-20 victory.

The league takes a break on Saturday, October 5, returning a week later.

Northern have taken over at the top of Regional 2 North after a 22-32 victory at Carlisle continued their unbeaten start to the season on September 28.

Middlesbrough recorded a 47-12 win over Kirkby Lonsdale to lead the trio in second with West Hartlepool racking up the points with a 73-0 victory over Upper Eden and Morpeth also beat Cumbrian opponents with a 41-7 win over Keswick.

Fourth placed Consett completed the bad weekend for Cumbrian sides as they won 32-30 at home to Aspatria and Durham City moved up the table with a 50-17 victory over Guisborough.

The teams return to league action on October 12.

In the Regional 2 North West Firwood Waterloo went top with a 28-24 victory over Eccles on September 28, while Burnage kept up in second with a 13-18 win at Northwich.

In third Bowden beat Altrincham Kersal 50-19 to hold off Sandbach in fourth who won 14-51 at Crewe & Northwich as Douglas (I.O.M) moved into the mid-table battle with a 53-6 win over Vale of Lune and Widnes won 24-10 at home to Winnington Park.

The league takes a break returning on October 12.

There is an early three way tussle at the top of the Cumbria League after the first four rounds.

Wigton sit top after a 3-114 win against a determined Ambleside while Penrith 2nd are second with a 8-45 victory over Keswick 2nd and Egremont scored a 17-27 win against Millom to take an early season lead in the Jackson Cup along with the league points.

Cockermouth moved up to fourth with a 0-26 win at Windermere as St Benedicts took fifth with a 0-62 victory at Workington while Creighton were 19-10 winners at home to Hawcoat Park.

Whitehaven’s game at Aspatria 2nd was awarded to them.

The Cumbria League takes a break as some sides are involved in the County Cup.

Cumbria County Cup

While some sides take a breather and gather their thoughts after the opening four games some of the Cumbrian sides turn their attention to the County Cup.

The quarter finals take place on Saturday, October 5, with Cockermouth heading to Kirkby Lonsdale while Aspatria travel to Kendal while last seasons winners Penrith make a shorter trip to Keswick.

Already waiting for the other winners of the quarter finals is Upper Eden who beat Carlisle 31-34 in August.
