‘It Has Been An Honour’ To Raise Funds For Hospice at Home West Cumbria

A fundraiser has completed one of the world’s greatest treks raising funds for Hospice at Home West Cumbria in memory of his sister.

Calvin Adams, who grew up in Workington, successfully completed one of the greatest treks in the world, in honour of his sister.

After Calvin’s sister Melanie received a terminal cancer diagnosis, he decided to take on the challenge of trekking across the Gondogorro La pass in the shadow of K2, fulfilling a lifetime dream while also raising money for Hospice at Home West Cumbria.

Speaking to Calvin on why he took on the challenge he said: “I wanted to do it as a thank you for the support Hospice at Home West Cumbria provided for Melanie during her illness.”

Sadly, Melanie passed away before Calvin set off on his trek, which saw him cover 120km over two weeks, ascending the Baltoro Glacier and passing five of the world’s highest mountains.

Calvin continued: “It has been an honour to raise some funds for Hospice at Home West Cumbria. The care and advice given to Mel and our entire family allowed Mel the dignity she deserved during her final struggles and allowed us all to be together at the end.”

Calvin has now raised over £2,000 through this challenge, with the support of Melanie’s daughter Fiona Musgrave, who has been fundraising in her salon, Truth Hair and Beauty, in Workington.

Holly Harkness, Community Fundraising Co-ordinator for Hospice at Home West Cumbria, praised Calvin and family for their fundraising efforts.

Holly said: “We are so grateful to Calvin for taking on this mammoth challenge to raise funds for our vital palliative and end-of-life services in memory of his sister Melanie.

“It is so rewarding to see how the care we provide across our community can make such an impact on the family of a patient, that they then decide to fundraise in their memory so that other local families can benefit from our services.”
