After two days of competition finals Cumbria have their champions and the majority of their national finals representatives.
With four National Finalists already booking there place through the regional qualifiers it was now the turn of Cumbria Bowling Association’ county competitions to decide the rest.
Regional Qualifiers
- Aspatria’s Ann Creighton and Appleby’s Lesley Metcalfe in the Over 55 Women’s Pairs
- Workington’s Malcolm Smitham in the Over 55 Men’s Pairs
- Workington’s Tina Smitham in the Over 55 Women’s Singles
- Workington’s Rachel Forster in the Mixed Fours
Heading to Wigton bowling club on Saturday, July 27, three singles titles were up for grabs with the Men’s Junior Singles heading to Aspatria as both competitors were from the same club.
David Wilson took victory with a 21-15 win over Harry Creighton while the Men’s Single title also went to Aspatria with Mark Irwin beating Workington’s James Park 21-18.
The Women’s Singles went to Workington with Victoria Cook winning 21-17 against Appleby’s Lesley Metcalfe.
The Men’s Pairs followed with Workington’s Matthew Hodgson and Steven Cook beating Aspatria’s Michael Bain and David Wilson 20-1.
In the two Fours finals Carlisle Subscription’ quartet of David Lee, Lawrence Kelly, Tom Prescott and John Baird beat Cleator Moor’s Arnie Wilson, Steven Byers, Carl Neen and Malcolm Little 21-16 to take the Men’s Senior Fours.
The four women from Carlisle Subscription Jacqueline Lee, Linda Wallis, Val Graham and Alison Hullock couldn’t make it a double as Workington’s Rachel Forster, Carole Bannister, Tina Smitham and Victoria Cook won 24-5.
In the two county title games Carlisle’ Courtfield’ Paul Campbell beat Workington’s Frank Tinnion 21-19 and Harris Park’s trio of Jonathan Moffat, Alex Smith and Ray Barclay won 19-8 against Courtfield’ Stephen Boyd, David Graham and Colin Jefferson to claim the Roland Starkie triple.

Whitehaven was centre stage on Sunday, July 28, as the final titles and representatives would be decided.
In the Men’s Triples Workington’s Frank Tinnion, Malcolm Smitham and James Fuge lost 19-7 to Wigton Park’s Keenan Baxter, Steven Farish and Paul Coulthard before in the Men’s Fours Wigton Park lost to Aspatria.
As Kevin Harrison, Peter Irving, Mark Irwin and Stuart Irwin beat Wigton Park’s Lee Coulthard or Joe Coulthard, Keenan Baxter, Lewis Baxter and Paul Coulthard 21-8.
Workington claimed the Women’s Two Wood Singles with Tina Smitham missing out 14-15 to Noreen Fleet as Workington’s Rachel Forster and Victoria Cook took the Women’s Pairs with a 19-7 win over Wigton’s Molly Haney and Chelsea Browbank.
In the Women’s Triples Tina Smitham and Noreen Fleet were joined Linda Abram to beat Courtfield’s Jo Dawson, Anne Coulthard and Gill Dawes 21-8.
The Junior Pairs went to the mixed team of Whitehaven’s Ryan Corkill and Wigton’s Callum Hodgson with a 19-3 win over Aspatria’s Jack Wilson and Harry Creighton.
In the county games the Mixed Fours went to Workington’s Dawn Lawrence, Carole Bannister, Matthew Hodgson and David Forster with a 20-9 win over Wigton’s Pauline Hodgson, Ann Dalziel, David Hodgson and Callum Hodgson.
The Mixed Pairs had David Forster and Dawn Lawrence missing out 21-9 to Jeanette Bell and John Bell while Bob Dalziel lost 14-21 to Martyn Holding in the Men’s Secretaries’/Treasurers Singles.
To finish off the action the County Cup between Workington A and Aspatria A was play with Workington taking the cup 22-37.
