Cumbria Bowls: Finals Timetable Revealed With National Representatives To Be Decided

All eyes in Cumbria’s bowling community will be turned to Wigton and Whitehaven as Cumbria Bowling Association has revealed the timetable for the finals of the county competitions.

Months of competition have come down to one session with the victors heading to the National Finals in August.

Wigton Bowling Club

The two days of finals start at 10am on Saturday, July 27, at Wigton with two sessions taking place with three national finalists being decided in the day’s first session.

Up first is the Men’s Pairs with Workington’s Matthew Hodgson and Steven Cook facing Aspatria’s Michael Bain and David Wilson.

The Men’s Two Wood Singles has Aspatria’s Kevin Harrison playing Silloth’s Adam Hocking and Workington’s Victoria Cook taking on Appleby’s Lesley Metcalfe for the Women’s Singles title.

Victory in all three will earn the winner a place at the National Finals.

Also on at 10am is the Men’s Restricted Singles with Workington’s Frank Tinnion playing Carlisle club Courtfield’s Paul Campbell.

The Roland Starkie triples has Harris Park trio of Jonathan Moffat, Alex Smith and Ray Barclay facing Courtfields Stephen Boyd, David Graham and Colin Jefferson.

In the afternoon session at 1pm, all four matches will produce a Cumbrian representative as Aspatria’s Mark Irwin faces Workington’s James Park for the Men’s Singles title while Aspatria will take the Junior Singles title with Harry Creighton playing David Wilson.

In the Men’s Senior Fours Cleator Moor’s Arnie Wilson, Steven Byers, Carl Neen and Malcolm Little take on Carlisle Subscription’s David Lee, Lawrence Kelly, Tom Prescott and John Baird.

In the Women’s Fours Carlisle Subscription’s Jacqueline Lee, Linda Wallis, Val Graham and Alison Hullock play Workington’s Rachel Forster, Carole Bannister, Tina Smitham and Victoria Cook.

Whitehaven Recreation Bowling Club

Another five National Finals representatives will be decided at Whitehaven on Sunday, July 28, at 10am Workington’s Frank Tinnion, Malcolm Smitham and James Fuge take on Wigton Park’s Keenan Baxter, Steven Farish and Paul Coulthard in the Men’s Triples.

The Women’s Pairs have Wigton’s Molly Haney and Chelsea Browbank playing Workington’s Rachel Forster and Victoria Cook while Workington will take the Women’s Two Wood Singles with Tina Smitham and Noreen Fleet battling it out.

In the Mixed Fours, the county title is up for grabs as Wigton’s Pauline Hodgson, Ann Dalziel, David Hodgson and Callum Hodgson face Workington’s Dawn Lawrence, Carole Bannister, Matthew Hodgson and David Forster.

Three representatives will be decided in the afternoon session at 1pm with the Junior Mixed Pairs being played between Aspatria’s Jack Wilson and Harry Creighton and Whitehaven’s Ryan Corkill and Wigton’s Callum Hodgson.

In the Women’s Triples Workington’s Tina Smitham, Linda Abram and Noreen Fleet face Courtfield’s Jo Dawson, Anne Coulthard and Gill Dawes.

Over in the Men’s Fours Aspatria’s Kevin Harrison, Peter Irving, Mark Irwin and Stuart Irwin take on Wigton Park’s Lee Coulthard or Joe Coulthard, Keenan Baxter, Lewis Baxter and Paul Coulthard.

With several disciplines decided at a regional level, Cumbria already has representatives at the National Finals at Royal Lemington Spa with:

  • Workington’s Malcolm Smitham in the Over 55 Men’s Pairs
  • Workington’s Tina Smitham in the Over 55 Women’s Singles
  • Workington’s Rachel Forster in the Mixed Fours
