Cumbria Cricket League: Season Starts After Weather Threatens To Delay It

The top division of the Cumbria Cricket League got underway after the weather threatened to delay the leagues start.

The Premier Division got underway on Saturday, April 27, and 2023 Champions Carlisle started with a defeat at home to Keswick.

Fielding first Carlisle were taken the full 50 overs by Keswick as Risith Upamal scored an unbeaten 65 as the visitors finished on 177.

Again going the full 50 overs Carlisle fell 11 runs short as Ben Davidson scored 46 with Keswick’s James McGown taking 3 wickets for 14 runs.

Promoted Dalton sit second after a single run victory against Cleator.

Losing the toss home side Dalton were put into bat with Liam Curwen hitting 70 as they finished on 200.

Falling a run short Geeth Kumara top scored for Cleator with 64 as they finished on 201.

Title challengers from the past seasons Cockermouth sit top of the pile after setting host Wigton a target of 164 with Tom Norman making 51 not out.

Shrikant Mundhe then ripped through the opening three batsmen before Joshua Brown took 5 wickets for 16 runs as Wigton were bowled out for 57.

Whitehaven successfully chased down Furness to claim an opening day victory after being put into the field.

Matthew Kleinveldt made an unbeaten 58 as Furness were bowled out for 157 with Terance Warde taking 4 and Lewis Keeler taking 3 wickets.

Whitehaven’s Chase Young reached 59 while Stephen Holliday hit 58 as the home side made 160 to win.

Put into bat by the home side Workington’s Matthew Lowden made 82 with Jack White reaching 76 as they set Egremont a target of 277.

Egremont struggled with Raghav Kupar scoring 20 as they were bowled out for 62 with David Pearce taking 4 wickets for 25 runs.

Returning to action on Saturday, May 4, early leaders Cockermouth welcome Egremont as Dalton head to Furness while Keswick travel to Cleator.

Fourth placed Whitehaven head south to Millom while Wigton face Carlisle and Haverigg make the trip to Workington.

In Division One the season starts on May 5 with Ulverston hosting Cockermouth 2nd while Vickerstown take on Workington 2nd and Hawcoat Park face Seascale.

Whitehaven 2nd play their first game since promotion at home to Furness 2nd as Wetheral start life in the Cumbria League with a home fixture against Millom 2nd
