Five People Recovered In Multi-Agency Rescue On Cumbrian Lake

A multi-agency rescue recovered five people following a canoeing incident on Derwentwater, in Cumbria.

On Friday, April 12, Keswick Mountain Rescue Team, North West Ambulance Service, Fire & Rescue Service, Coastguard Helicopter, HM Coastguard, Maryport Inshore Lifeboat and Cumbria Police, were all tasked to help capsized canoeists.

A multi-agency response was underway after a canoe capsized.

A group of five in two canoes were heading towards St Herbert’s Island on Derwentwater when one of the canoes with three people capsized in rough and windy conditions.

One person had manage to self rescue and tried to help the other two in the water.

The other canoe had made it to the island and called for assistance.

A rescue boat was launched and was able to help the three who were struggling to make progress in the windy conditions.

The rescue boat then made its way to the island to pick up the other two in the group and returned all five safety.

In a statement Keswick Mountain Rescue said: “All were cold, but one was suffering mild hypothermia and was examined by the ambulance service.”

Keswick MRT added their thanks to the Keswick Launch Company who recovered the canoes and equipment that had been left behind.

The Denton House Hostel then provided accommodation to the five rescued canoeists.

This followed a separate incident on the Keswick lake where a paddleboard was recovered, with a snapped ankle strap.

This prompted a multi-agency search for the unknown owner.

The two incidents are not linked.
